Student Recognition Award Recipient and Valedictorian Braydon - Ottawa Technical Learning Centre Braydon will actually be able to tell his grandchildren, with all honesty, that he walked two hours to school and two hours back home in minus 30-degree winter weather with the wind howling at his back just so he would not miss a single day of school. This young man refused to let the 51-day old OC Transpo strike impact his dream to receive his high school diploma this coming June from the Ottawa Technical Learning Centre. Braydon will end his high school career as a mentor, a leader, and a school ambassador according to his proud principal, Barry Armstrong, who says he is not the only one who is singing this young man’s praises. His work hosts describe Braydon as the ideal worker who is dependable, very polite, positive, energetic, and highly motivated. Braydon’s teachers, his principal, and his fellow students think he is destined for success. |

Edmund Poulsen is an advocate for special needs students and has dedicated his working career to getting physically challenged students equality with their mainstream peers. His career objective is to have special needs students acknowledge life’s possibilities and potential rather than their limitations. Edmond hopes that this will encourage others to look at the whole person and to embrace potential and promote change. In 1999 he designed and implemented the Physical Support Physical Education Program at Ottawa Technical Learning Centre. Edmund has inspired many with his personal triumphs. 2009 OCDSB Community Award Winner
2009 Community Award Winner Jacques Lavallee
|
Jacques Lavallee Owner of Barrhaven Flooring and The Flooring
Store Jacques Lavallee was one of the driving forces in introducing
a Flooring Program to Ottawa Technical Learning Centre in 2006. He realized
there was a shortage of skilled workers in this field and wanted to
provide opportunities for students to learn the trade and eventually
find employment in the flooring industry in our community.
To that end Jacques provided his expertise and business connections to support the program. He was instrumental in organizing a golf tournament to help raise funds. In the first year the tournament raised over $12,000 and over $7,000 was raised in the second year. This money went towards equipment and materials necessary to facilitate the program. His business contacts from manufacturers and suppliers have brought in an additional $40,000 of product support and technical expertise. Jacques spoke at the 3rd Annual Ontario Vocational School Conference to share his experiences working with OTLC with the rest of the vocational schools in the province. In the school he ensured the teacher was trained and ran workshops with other flooring instructors to demonstrate the skills of the trade to students. Jacques is an avid supporter of the Flooring Program at OTLC and this is shown through the PowerPoint presentation he shares with other members of the flooring industry throughout North America. He donated his time to speak with the entire student body about what kinds of skills are needed to be a good employee in the industry and the relationships needed to ensure a good working environment for students to become contributing, civic-minded members of society. He takes cooperative education students to work in his stores allowing them to gain experience working directly with the public and addressing their specific needs with regards to the industry. Without Jacques’s foresight, initiative, support, and commitment to the program OTLC’s flooring program would not exist. |

Thank you very much MBNA Canada - Bank of America

Mr. Patton, MBNA Canada - Bank of America representative
accepting a gift of appreciation from Mr. Lockwood,
Head of Physical Education Department, OTLC
A generous donation of $5,000 from MBNA Canada - Bank of America will allow us us to cover the cost of purchasing a new scoreboard, having the old one removed and the new scoreboard installed in our main gym. At one point it looked as if we would be without a functional scoreboard this year. However, with the help of our Administration and the Athletic Department we were able to complete a successful grant application to the MBNA Canada - Bank of America, Community Philanthropy office for the necessary funds. By having the money to replace the scoreboard now, we have significantly reduced the time our teams and fans have without the use of a large scoreboard to stay up-to-date with the progress of the game.
The new scoreboard is expected to arrive and be installed this month, January
2009. The presence of a shiny new scoreboard, in school colors, with energy
saving LED illumination, will once again put some razzle dazzle back into
experiencing our OTLC Varsity performances.
